Here is the science behind using Botox for wrinkles: Clostridium botulinum bacteria produce a class of chemical compounds known as "toxins.” The Botulinum Type A Toxin is processed and purified to produce a sterile product (neuromodulator) branded as BOTOX®/DYSPORT®/NUCEIVA that is suitable for specific therapeutic uses including temporary muscle relaxation.

Neuromodulators are injected into the selected muscles to produce a temporary paralysis of them by preventing transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle. Botox injection is approved by Health Canada for the treatment of upper facial dynamic wrinkles by reducing or eliminating the patient’s ability to contract certain muscles responsible for forehead lines, crow's feet lines, and frown lines. There are other cosmetic uses of Botox treatment which are considered "Off-Label," meaning that it is not specifically approved by Health Canada.
Knowledge, experience, and precision are collectively important determinants for achieving a natural aesthetic outcome with Botox injection.
An initial assessment is needed to determine how many units are needed. Aside from that, Botox injection per se is a quick procedure that usually takes about 15 minutes.
There is almost no downtime for this procedure. Botox treatment effect starts to appear 4-7 days after the injection and maximizes in about 2 weeks. The temporary muscle paralysis generally lasts approximately 3-4 months. Therefore, the injected muscles would gradually return to their normal activity without periodic treatments.
The Botox treatment interval differs from patient to patient. Based on the patient’s preference, Botox injection sessions can be spaced 3-6 months apart.
